CHANGE READINESS · HUMAN PERFORMANCE · BEHAVIOR CHANGE

You know what needs to change. So why isn't it happening?

Understanding the plan is rarely the problem. I help leaders, professionals, and organizations build the motivation, confidence, and conditions to actually follow through, not just agree with what's needed.

WHY CHANGE READINESS?

Knowing isn't necessary doing.

Most change efforts don't stall from a lack of information. People understand what needs to change. They may even agree it matters. And they still hesitate, disengage, or slide back into old patterns. That's not a knowledge gap. It's a readiness gap, and it's a specific, describable thing, not a character flaw.

Knowing isn't doing.

Knowing isn’t doing.

Understanding a change is different from having the motivation, confidence, and capability to act on it.

Resistance contains information.

Resistance contains information.

Hesitation, ambivalence, avoidance, and disengagement can reveal what is preventing meaningful movement.

Readiness can be developed.

Readiness can be developed.

Motivation, confidence, commitment, leadership behavior, and supportive conditions can all be strengthened.

HOW I HELP

Change happens at multiple levels.

A team stops using a new process a month after training. A leader knows what to say in the room but freezes. An organization rolls out new values and nothing on the ground changes. Different challenges. Different levels. The same question: what will help change actually happen?

A Practical Lens for Change Readiness

What makes someone ready for change?

When change isn’t happening, it’s tempting to assume people are resistant, unmotivated, or simply need more information. Curious what actually shapes readiness? Here's the lens I use.

About Martin

I’ve spent my career in the space between knowing and doing.

For more than 15 years, I’ve worked with leaders, teams, and organizations being asked to do something differently—lead differently, make better decisions, adopt new practices, or change established ways of working.Again and again, I’ve seen the same challenge: understanding what needs to change doesn’t necessarily make us ready to change it.Today, I bring together applied psychology, coaching, motivational interviewing, human performance, and organizational change to explore what helps people move from knowing to doing.

READY TO TALK?

What’s getting in the way of change?

You don’t need to know which service you need before reaching out. Whether you’re working on your own performance, helping others navigate change, planning an important learning experience, or trying to shift organizational behavior, we can start with the challenge you’re facing.

SERVICES

Different change challenges require different kinds of support.

Sometimes the challenge is changing our own behavior. Sometimes it’s helping other people navigate change. And sometimes the leadership, culture, systems, and everyday conditions surrounding people need attention too.I work across four interconnected levels of change through coaching, facilitation, and advisory support.

INDIVIDUAL

Human Performance Coaching

I want to change how I work or perform.

GROUP

Experiential Workshop Facilitation

We need people to learn, reflect, practice, or work through something together.

LEADER

Change Leadership Coaching

I need to help other people navigate change.

ORGANIZATION

Culture Change Advisory

We need to understand and shift the conditions affecting change.

INDIVIDUAL

Human Performance Coaching

You made the plan. The week got away from you anyway.

You knew what mattered. You may even have blocked the time. But attention went elsewhere, difficult work got avoided, habits took over, or the urgent crowded out the important. This isn’t necessarily a discipline problem. Coaching gives us a place to get specific about what happens between intention and action, and experiment with ways of working that are more effective and sustainable.

WE MIGHT WORK ON

  • Focus and attention

  • Motivation and follow-through

  • Productivity and prioritization

  • Habits and behavior change

  • Procrastination and avoidance

  • Resilience and adaptability

  • Decision-making

  • Self-leadership and personal effectiveness

HOW WE'LL WORK

Rather than starting with a productivity system or assuming you simply need more discipline, we’ll get curious about the gap between what you intend to do and what actually happens. My approach draws from coaching, motivational interviewing, applied psychology, and behavior-change research. Together, we'll identify what matters, explore what's helping or getting in the way, and develop practical experiments you can test in your actual work and life.

THE AIM

Greater clarity about what matters, stronger follow-through, and ways of working that are both effective and sustainable.

TYPICAL FORMAT

1:1 coaching · Virtual · Single-session or ongoing engagements

Interested in working together?

LEADER

Change Leadership Coaching

You're expected to lead the change and manage your own reaction to it.

You’re helping other people navigate uncertainty while managing competing priorities, resistance, organizational pressure, and your own response to what’s happening.Coaching gives you space to step out of the immediate demands, make sense of what you’re seeing, and become more deliberate about how you communicate, listen, influence, and respond.

WE MIGHT WORK ON

  • Leading through uncertainty and transition

  • Understanding and working with resistance

  • Building commitment rather than compliance

  • Communicating change effectively

  • Navigating difficult conversations

  • Coaching others through change

  • Stakeholder engagement and influence

  • Sustaining your own effectiveness while leading change

HOW WE'LL WORK

We’ll use the actual change situations you’re navigating—not hypothetical leadership scenarios, as the material for our work.Together, we’ll examine what’s happening, explore the perspectives and motivations of the people involved, and identify conversations, behaviors, and practical experiments that could help move things forward.

THE AIM

To help you lead change with greater awareness, flexibility, and confidence while creating conditions that make it easier for others to engage and move with you.

TYPICAL FORMAT

Facing a change leadership challenge?

GROUP

Experiential Workshop Facilitation

Nobody leaves a good workshop just having heard something.

Good workshops get people doing something: reflecting, talking honestly, testing assumptions, practicing, learning from one another, and connecting ideas to the realities of their work.I design and facilitate experiences that make participants active contributors to the learning rather than passive recipients of content.

Five Capabilities

HOW I FACILITATE

The format serves the learning, not the other way around.Depending on the objective and audience, sessions may combine facilitated dialogue, individual reflection, case work, peer learning, skills practice, simulations, structured exercises, and action planning.

THE AIM

Create the reflection, dialogue, practice, and commitment that help learning translate into behavior back at work.

Planning a workshop or a learning initiative?

Are you a consulting or learning firm looking for experienced facilitation capacity?

ORGANIZATION

Culture Change Advisory

The values statement went out. The behavior didn't change.

Culture isn’t changed through values statements, training, or communication campaigns alone. Everyday behavior is shaped by leadership, norms, systems, incentives, competing demands, relationships, and what gets reinforced in practice.I help organizations understand those conditions and identify where focused changes could make a meaningful difference.

AREAS OF FOCUS

Culture & Change Readiness
Understand how current beliefs, behaviors, and conditions affect readiness for change.
Leadership & Alignment
Examine how leadership priorities, decisions, and behavior shape the environment for change.
Behavior & Organizational Conditions
Identify the systems, norms, demands, and incentives that help explain why current behavior persists.
Assessment & Insight
Use interviews, focus groups, surveys, observations, and existing organizational data to identify patterns and develop a more grounded picture of what's happening.

HOW WE'LL WORK

The work starts with inquiry rather than assumptions.Depending on the challenge, I may combine interviews, focus groups, surveys, observations, leadership conversations, working sessions, and existing organizational data to identify patterns and opportunities for focused action.

THE AIM

A clearer understanding of what's shaping current behavior—and a practical path toward strengthening the conditions that make meaningful change more likely.

TYPICAL ENGAGEMENTS

ABOUT MARTIN

Understanding what helps people change is the thread running through my work.

For more than 15 years, I’ve worked at the intersection of psychology, leadership, learning, human performance, and organizational change.Across very different rooms, I kept encountering the same puzzle: people could understand what needed to change, genuinely want a different outcome, and still struggle to do something differently. That question increasingly led me toward change readiness, and toward understanding what helps people become ready, willing, and able to change.

THE THREAD THROUGH MY WORK

From understanding behavior to helping change happen.

01

UNDERSTANDING BEHAVIOR

Psychology & organizational behavior

My work began with an interest in why people think, decide, behave, and perform the way they do at work.

02

HELPING PEOPLE CHANGE

Coaching, facilitation & learning

That interest moved increasingly into practice, coaching leaders and designing experiences that help people reflect, learn, practice, and change behavior.

03

UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITIONS FOR CHANGE

Human performance & organizational change

Working with organizations made one thing increasingly clear: behavior isn’t only about individual motivation. Leadership, culture, systems, demands, and context shape what people actually do.

"Those threads now come together in my work on change readiness: understanding what helps people move from intention to meaningful action."

WHAT INFORMS MY WORK

Evidence matters. So does what actually happens in practice.

I draw from several disciplines because change rarely fits neatly into one.

Applied Psychology

Motivation · Behavior · Decision-making · Positive Psychology

Motivational Interviewing

Ambivalence · Readiness · Confidence · Commitment

Coaching

Reflection · Perspective · Experimentation · Action

Adult & Experiential Learning

Dialogue · Practice · Reflection · Application

Human Performance

Context · Systems · Demands · Habits · Conditions

Organizational Change

Governance · Leadership · Culture · Communication · Influence

HOW I WORK

Curiosity before certainty.

I don’t assume that resistance means someone is difficult, that low motivation means someone doesn’t care, or that a struggling change effort simply needs better communication.I start by trying to understand what makes the current behavior or reaction make sense.

A few principles guide my work:START WITH INQUIRY
Understand the situation before prescribing the solution.
WORK WITH AMBIVALENCE
Mixed feelings about change are normal and often contain useful information.
CONNECT INSIGHT TO ACTION
Reflection matters most when it leads to a conversation, decision, experiment, or behavior that can be tested in the real world.
LOOK AT THE SYSTEM
Individual behavior doesn't happen in isolation. Leadership, norms, incentives, workload, processes, and context all matter.
STAY PRACTICAL
Good ideas have to survive contact with actual work.

Grounded in years of work with real people and real organizations.
